Transgendered CU-Boulder student wins prestigious scholarship

When Kyle Inselman came out as transgender, he wasn't met with acceptance.

Inselman, who grew up in Eugene, Ore., was not allowed to express his gender identity at home. And his Catholic high school didn't allow any gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender student support groups.

Inselman -- now attending the University of Colorado -- is one of 25 students across the country to receive a competitive scholarship from an organization that supports GLBT students. More than 1,600 students applied for the scholarships from the Point Foundation.

The Point Foundation would not allow press interviews with its scholars until they went through media training.

Inselman still worked on social justice issues while in high school. But now as a CU student, he's become immersed in opportunities, and leads a transgender support group on the campus.

Throughout his three years in college, he has held leadership positions with student groups and organizations that work on gay issues, as well as volunteered to organize events with the university's GLBT Resource Center, where he works as a student staff member.
