Diversity Advocacy will sponsor “A Transgender Story with Kye Allums” on Wednesday.
Allums is a 22-year-old from St. Paul, Minn., and is a graduate of George Washington University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts.
As an undergraduate student, Allums came out as transgender, and was the first transgender woman to play basketball openly on a Division 1 women’s basketball team.
Ashley Taylor, specialist for educational programming for Diversity Advocacy in the Dean of Students Office, said that issues of gender and sexual orientation pertain directly to issues of diversity.
“Kye will share his life story illustrating his obstacles and challenges of coming out and being a transgender athlete on a Division 1 team,” Taylor explained.
Students who attend can expect to take away from it awareness about the issues surrounding the transgender community, and to learn more about issues related to gender identity, Taylor explained.
Allums will be available at two events on Wednesday.
